Secret Agent Man Goes Shopping for Shoes

This was my third book and the first time I learned how books actually get made. Editors and art directors act like sommeliers, pairing illustrators and authors based on their instincts and taste. I've heard from other illustrators that it's preferred if the two don't connect directly. There's a high chance the author has a creative vision for the art that doesn't line up with the illustrator's and that tension can complicate things.

Tim Wynne-Jones wrote a great book. We never exchanged emails. I hope he liked the illustrations.

"The realistic and the imaginary realms merge at climactic points, with the illustrations appearing either split screen–style or with a frightened Sam shown as a child against the dark S.A.M. background. Children will enjoy sharing Sam’s clever, creative adventure. A terrific read-aloud with bold, dynamic art."

“This spirited story captures the enthusiasm of make-believe games, not to mention the appeal of brand-new sneakers.”
